Premier League campaigners Chelsea have been
hit with a severe blow on Friday evening, April
20, following the death of their former star
player Roy Bentley.
Roy Bentley was the one that skippered the Blues
to their first ever top-flight title in 1955 and died
at the age of 93.
The deceased who also played for Fulham and
QPR during his active playing time top-scored at
Stamford Bridge seven years in a row.
Chelsea have however confirmed the demise of
their ex powerful goal-poacher who netted 150
times in 367 games for the Blues.
Bentley joined home-town club Bristol City in
1939, scoring on his debut aged 15, but his
career really took off once he switched to
Newcastle in 1946.
Then he became a household name after moving
to Chelsea for £11,000 two years later.
Bentley initially struggled at the Bridge as the
replacement for all-time great Tommy Lawton,
who hit 22 goals in 23 games for England.
He bagged only three goals in his first 15
matches albeit on the right wing for the Blues
But today, the only players above him are also
icons of Chelsea's history Frank Lampard (211
goals), Bobby Tambling (202), Kerry Dixon (193)
and Didier Drogba (164).
Meanwhile, the demise of Roy Bentley came 16
days after Chelsea lost another former star Ray
Wilkins who died in a London hospital.
Ray Wilkins was reported to have been rushed to
an hospital in London after suffering a cardiac
arrest and was placed in an induced coma.
