Bayelsa Polls: Election observer urges eligible voters to participate actively

ABUJA-AHEAD of the governorship election on December 5, 2015, in Bayelsa State, an election observer, National Association of State Assembly Legislators (NASAL), has urged eligible voters in Bayelsa State, to effectively participate in the forthcoming election by coming out massively to vote candidates of their choice.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director-General, NASAL, Hon. Uchechukwu Chukwuma, as he calls on supporters of political parties and candidates in the race to Government House, Yenagoa, to maintain peaceful conduct before, during and after the election.

Chukwuma said the election should not be seen as a do or die affair rather as a game whereby there will be a winner and loser, but the result should be accepted by the candidates, parties and supporters.

He said: “It is has become imperative to make it clear that voters in Bayelsa State should not sit at home with their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), but come out and effectively participate in the election and vote for the candidate they want for another four years.

“We in NASAL, are committed to a credible electoral process and sustainable development of the nation’s democracy.”

Chukwuma also stated that NASAL will hold sessions with political stakeholders of the governorship election in order to ensure a smooth electoral process in the state come December 5.

“NASAL is an accredited electoral observer by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and we will be in Bayelsa State to observe and monitor the governorship election on December 5.

“As part of our mandate before the day of the election, we will sensitise the electorates in all the eight local government areas of the state before the election.

“We will also engage with the political parties fielding candidates for the election, then meet with the candidates to ensure peace is maintained in the state before, during and after the election,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Chukwuma has commended the performance of INEC in the conduct of the Kogi governorship election, and also expressed optimism that the electoral umpire will do better in conducting the Bayelsa State governorship election.

He also condoled with the family and people of Kogi State over the sudden demise of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prince Abubakar Audu, and described his death as unfortunate.

However, he commended the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led government in the state by Governor Idris Wada for declaring a seven days of mourning to honour the late Audu.
